The question is rey mysterio retiring has circulated through wrestling communities for years, and in 2025 the answer remains more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Rey Mysterio, born Óscar Gutiérrez, has performed professionally since 1989, making him one of the longest-tenured active luchadors in history.
At 50 years old, he continues to compete in WWE while openly discussing the end of his in-ring career. The confusion stems from conflicting reports, his own shifting statements, and the physical toll of a 35-plus-year career.
This article breaks down what is actually known about Mysterio's retirement timeline, what he has said publicly, and what fans should watch for in the coming months.
Rey Mysterio's Current WWE Status in 2025
The short answer to is rey mysterio retiring — not yet. He remains under contract with WWE and appeared regularly on SmackDown through early 2025. According to WWE's official roster page, Mysterio is still listed as an active competitor on the SmackDown brand.
His most recent high-profile storyline involved the Latino World Order (LWO) faction and ongoing tensions with his son, Dominik Mysterio, who wrestles as a heel on Raw. For anyone tracking is rey mysterio retiring, the roster page remains the most reliable indicator.
Mysterio's schedule has visibly slowed compared to his peak years. He no longer performs on every weekly show, and WWE has positioned him as a special-attraction talent rather than a full-time workhorse. This reduced workload is a common pattern for veteran performers approaching the end of their careers.
Fans who ask is rey mysterio retiring often point to this lighter schedule as evidence, though WWE has not confirmed any departure.
How to apply this: Check WWE's official roster page or Mysterio's recent match history on Cagematch to see his current booking frequency before assuming he has retired.
What Rey Mysterio Has Said About Retirement
Mysterio has addressed retirement directly in multiple interviews. In a 2023 appearance on "The MMA Hour" with Ariel Helwani, he stated that he wanted to wrestle until his body told him to stop, and that he hoped to have a proper farewell match rather than fading away quietly.
He has repeatedly cited his family — particularly his desire to spend more time with his wife and children — as a major factor in his decision timeline.
In 2024, Mysterio told "Sports Illustrated" that he was "closer to the end than the beginning" but declined to set a specific retirement date. This pattern of deliberate ambiguity is intentional. Wrestlers often avoid announcing exact retirement dates to preserve storyline flexibility and negotiation leverage.

How to apply this: Follow Mysterio's verified social media accounts and reputable wrestling journalists like Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful for the most current statements rather than relying on rumor-driven fan accounts.
Physical Health and Career Longevity Factors
The physical demands of lucha libre have taken a documented toll on Mysterio. He has undergone multiple knee surgeries throughout his career, including procedures in 2011, 2015, and 2020. His signature high-flying style — featuring moves like the 619 and West Coast Pop — places extraordinary stress on joints and connective tissue.
These injuries are a major reason the debate over is rey mysterio retiring never fully fades.
Despite these challenges, Mysterio has adapted his in-ring style. He now relies more on ring awareness, timing, and psychology than aerial risk-taking. This adjustment has extended his career considerably. Many industry observers note that his matches remain high-quality even at reduced intensity.
As long as he keeps performing at that level, the question of is rey mysterio retiring will likely stay unresolved.
How to apply this: Watch his recent matches and note how his move set has evolved — fewer top-rope dives, more mat-based sequences — to gauge how much longer his body can sustain WWE-level competition.
Contract Status and WWE's Plans
Mysterio's contract situation has been a recurring topic. In 2023, multiple wrestling news outlets reported that he had signed a contract extension with WWE, though the exact length was not publicly disclosed. WWE typically structures veteran contracts with reduced dates and appearance obligations.
Every new contract report reignites speculation about is rey mysterio retiring, since each extension pushes his farewell further into the future.
WWE's creative direction with Mysterio suggests a gradual transition. His storyline with Dominik has positioned his son as a major singles star, and Mysterio has increasingly served as a mentor figure for younger Latino talent like Santos Escobar and Dragon Lee. This pattern mirrors how WWE handled other legends' exits — building the next generation before the veteran departs.
Until WWE publicly addresses is rey mysterio retiring, his contract status remains the strongest signal of his plans.
How to apply this: Monitor WWE's booking of Mysterio over the next several months. If he begins losing more frequently or transitions into a manager role, retirement is likely imminent.
Retirement Match Speculation and Legacy
The most discussed scenario among fans is a potential retirement match against Dominik Mysterio. This father-versus-son storyline has been built since 2022, when Dominik turned on his father at Clash at the Castle. A retirement match between them would be a massive pay-per-view draw and a fitting conclusion to one of wrestling's most personal rivalries.
Any speculation about is rey mysterio retiring inevitably circles back to this matchup.
Mysterio's legacy is already secure. He is a former WWE Champion, World Heavyweight Champion, and Royal Rumble winner. His influence on smaller wrestlers and the mainstreaming of lucha libre in American wrestling is widely acknowledged.
